The four bronze sculptures placed on the outer containing wall of the fountain's pool dispensed drinking water to the public. Each is figured as a boy riding an animal. Positioned at the northeast, a boy rides a snake; at the southeast, a turtle; at the southwest, a goose; and at the northwest, a dolphin. Water flowed from the mouths of the animals into a small stone bowl. This water was originally chilled the first chilled water drinking fountain in the world. The water was cooled by running it through thousands of feet of pipe lining an underground stone-lined pit, and filled with blocks of ice! These four drinking fountain figures were modeled by Colonel Ferdinand von Miller, the eldest son of the foundry master Ferdinand von Miller.
