Inspection and Specification of Coatings
The sculpture of the 1960's through the 1980's included many forms
of painted steel and aluminum that today are greatly in need of
recoating. McKay Lodge Conservation Laboratory, Inc. provides industry
standard coatings failure analysis, coatings specification writing,
and coatings application inspections. Through training provided
by the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC), formerly the Steel
Structures Painting Council and through training provided by industry
leader KTA-Tator, Inc., we stay up-to-date on materials, test equipment,
methodology, and regulatory issues. We adapt the tools and methods
developed for the industrial coating of structures such as bridges,
tanks, ships, towers and power plants to the special aesthetic requirements
of modern sculpture. Today there are more durable coating products
available for sculpture that was fabricated and "shop coated"
decades ago that are acceptable to the artists of those creations.
Through carefully written specifications and inspection of the coating
process, field coating of these structures can result in coating
life expectancies exceeding 30 years.
No recoating of a significant modern sculpture should be done without:
- Knowledgeable Inspection
- Industry Standard Specifications for Recoating
- Third-Party Inspection of the Coating Procedure
- Documentation of the Coating Procedure
